Biography

Hannah Harriet Pedlingham Chaplin, also known by the stage name Lily Harley, was an English actress, singer and dancer who performed in British music halls from the age of 16. Chaplin was the mother of Charlie Chaplin and his two half-brothers.

lmpoverished and malnourished, she alternated during Charlie’s youth between shabby rooms in Kennington, Lambeth Workhouse and the public asylum at Cane Hill, Surrey. In 1912, Charlie and his brother Sydney visited her at Cane Hill and found that she had been confined to a padded room. She was then admitted to Peckham House on 9 September of that year.^[1]
