Biography

Daphne Ralda Courtney Higgs was born on 28 June 1916 and baptised on 19 August 1917 at St Alban the Martyr, Pretoria, South Africa, daughter of Jacobus and Anna Marthe Higgs. [1] She was later known as Daphne R Courtenay Hicks. [2] Her stage name was Daphne Courtney.

She arrived from Cape Town, South Africa at Southampton on 23 August 1920 with her mother on board the ship "Walmer Castle". [3]

She was an actress and photographic model. [4]

She married Hugh McDermott in 1936 at Marylebone, London. [2] They met when filming "The Captain's Table".

In 1939 she lived at 87 Langford Court, London,England. [4]

In 1948 she was living at 35 Neville Court, London. [5]

Daphne R. Courtenay-Hicks (born 1917), better known as Daphne Courtney, is a South African actress, who performed in B-movie British "quota quickies" of the 1930s and 1940s. She had a supporting role in at least one French film, Le battalion du ciel, directed by Alexander Esway. She also had a stage career, and stage credits include the first British performance of The Man Who Came to Dinner (17 Nov 1941) – pre-dating its London debut by three weeks – in which she appeared with her husband the Scottish actor Hugh McDermott. [6]
