From old Maryland and Washington DC colonial families, Charles Sylvester Higgs was born on February 15, 1872, in Mount Morris, Illinois when his father, Thomas Hammond Higgs, was 35 and his mother, Elizabeth Nalley Higgs, was 30. He married Norwegian-descent Olga Kaspara Jacobsen on July 19, 1905 in a Lutheran ceremony, in St Paul, Minnesota. They had four living children in 11 years, and a fifth baby was buried next to his parents' graves. He died in a motor vehicle accident during an unprecedented heat wave on July 7, 1937, at the age of 65 and was thought to have lost control of his vehicle after which he sustained physical trauma, and was buried in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Per direct male Y line testing, his Y haplogroup was I-M26--consistent with at least one line of western Euro/Atlantic Ocean descent.
