Biography
On 1 Jun 1905 at the time of the 1905 New York state census, head of household Charles Hier (age 33, born in USA) was employed as a Fireman and living at 220 Sale Street in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York with his wife Clara Hier (age 28, born in Germany); son Walter Hier (age 6, born in NY); son Arthur Hier (age 4, born in NY); son Harold Hier (age 3, born in NY); daughter Alice M. Hier (age 1, born in NY); father-in-law Carl P. Kraus (age 66, born in Germany); and mother-in-law Bertha Kraus (age 66, born in Germany). [1]
On 26 Apr 1910 at the time of the 1910 US Census, head of household Charles Hier (age 36, born in NY) was employed as a Fireman for Stationary and living in a home he owned with a mortgage at 120 Schiller Avenue in Syracuse, New York with his wife Clara Hier (age 30, born in Germany) who was employed in House Cleaning for a Private Family; son Walter H. Hier (age 11, born in NY); son Arthur A. Hier (age 9, born in NY); son Harold G. Hier (age 7, born in NY); daughter Alice M. Hier (age 6, born in NY); father-in-law Peter Carl Krause (age 70, born in Germany); and mother-in-law Bertha Krause (age 70, born in Germany). Charles and Clara had been married for 13 years. Clara had given birth to 5 children, 4 of whom were still alive at that time. Both of Charles' parents were born in Germany; both of Clara's parents were born in Germany. Carl and Bertha were married for 42 years; Bertha had given birth to 6 children, 5 of whom were still alive at that time. [2]
On 11 Jan 1920 at the time of the 1920 US Census, head of household Clara Hier (age 41, born in Germany) was Widowed and living in a home she owned with a mortgage at 120 Schiller Avenue in Syracuse, New York with her son Walter Hier (age 21, born in NY); son Arthur Hier (age 19, born in NY); son Harold Hier (age 17, born in NY); daughter Alice Hier (age 15, born in NY); boarder Leonard Smith (age 45, born in NY); and daughter Ruth Smith (age 16, born in NY). Both of Clara's parents were born in Germany. [3]

Death and Legacy
On 29 Jul 1949, Alice Sonabend died; her obituary was published in the Syracuse Herald Journal:
- SONABEND--MRS. ALICE M. SONABEND. In this city, July 29, 1949. Survived by her husband, John A. Sonabend; two daughters, the Misses Beverly and Doris Sonabend; three brothers, Walter, Arthur, and Harold Hier; three stepchildren. Services Monday at 10 A.M. at Welter Funeral Home. 2519 James Street. Rev. Dr. H.H. Downey officiating. Burial in Assumption Cemetery. Friends may call Saturday from 7 to 8 P.M. Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. [5]
