Disputed Relationship: Researchers disagree on whether or not this Robert was the father of the well-known Indian trader Robert Hicks (abt.1658-aft.1738).

Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Robert Hicks was a Virginia colonist.

"Robert Hix, the taylor, Senr"[1]

This Robert Hicks, who appears in Virginia Land Records in 1654 (see below), is probably the father of Robert Hicks, Indian trader, who died in Brunswick County, Virginia in 1739.[2] However, Bruce Hicks prefaces his presentation of circumstantial evidence supporting this in a 2001 post with the statement: "The origin of Robert Hicks, Indian trader of colonial Virginia, is not known."[3]

ROBERT HIX (Hicks) father of Captain Robert Hicks, was sponsored by Hugh Lee, and had a land holding awarded in 1654 (Surry Co. Virginia) from Lee when he arrived in Virginia. He was born c. 1636 and came into Virginia around 1654.[4]
The elder Robert is associated with John Evans (who owned land near Hix) and Robert's son, Captain Robert, married Evan's daughter, Winnifred in Surry County, Virginia. Captain Robert was born c. 1658 and it's possible he had a younger brother named Henry or John who might be Samuel's father. In 1665 John Hicks, John Evans and John Harris left Bristol (England) Baptist Church for New England (which at that time meant America) with three sisters (last name Mogg). The name John Evan may be more than coincidental and this could be the same John Evan, father-in-law to Captain Robert. The Henry Hicks could be a brother or son of Robert.[4]

Transportation of 7 persons; John Lee, Robert Boreman, Humphrey Hix, Hen. Snetgrove, Mary Drin, N. Satinbach, Wm. Lambut. (ref C & P Vol 3, P. 52)[1]
Note: In item 2 John Poythris, Robert Hix and Humphrey Hix are mentioned. An Anne Poythress (with Charles Ross and John Chapman) both witnessed and gave oath proving the 1739 will of Robert Hicks.[2]

Robert was born about 1630.

Captain Robert's father, also named Robert (the tailor, as that was his trade), was sponsored by Hugh Lee, and had a land holding dated 1654 (see below). He was born c. 1636 and came into Virginia around 1654. The second holding of that land may be him or by 1694 it may have transferred his son Captain Robert (no record). Note the land adjoins the land of John Evans, the Captain's father-in-law. There are at least two John Evans (Sr. and Jr.) that are involved with the Hicks family in Charles City Co. John Evans Sr. b. 1649 of Bristol ( m. Mary) of Charles Co. later moved to Prince Georges Co. Robert Hicks, Sr., born ca. 1650; married by 1685, Charles City Co., VA.[5]

Which Robert Hix left a will in 1739? I assume NOT this one, as that would make him well over 100 years of age. Did this Richard Hix die shortly after 1701?

From Benjamin B. Weisiger: Hugh Lee is first noted in Charles City County records in 1692 as "Hugh Lee, Jr." He lived in Bristol Parish and was surveyor of highways in 1715. In that year, he and his brother-in-law petitioned the court about the estate of his father-in-law, Samuel Tatum.

1714 August 10 – Prince George Country: Hugh Lee, Sr. and Ann, his wife of the county of Prince George in Bristol Parish deeded to Samuel Lee of the same county and parish for 100 acres of land, all houses and plantation where said Samuel Lee now lives in said fork of said branch (not named here).... (Signed) Hugh Lee, (Witnesses) John ("x') Womack, Daniel Sturdivan, Charles Roberts. Recorded 10 August 1714

If Hugh Lee was from Maryland, he even died there with his wife Hannah. So could this Robert hicks have come from Maryland?

Teresa, Hicks-5684 and Hicks-3762 are father and son. Are you sure you wanted to merge these two or did you get id numbers mixed up?
