CORONERS REPORT 30 OCTOBER 1888

On Sunday morning last about 11 o clock a very sudden death occurred at the Shire Hall Hotel, Fitzroy Street.

A young man named John Hicks about 28 years of age, who had been employed about the hotel during the last two years, off and on as a groom, retired to his room about 7.00pm the previous evening, under the influence of drink, and about 9.00am the following morning, Mr J Harrison, who was passing, heard him groaning and went to him when he complained that he had been very bad during the night. Mr Harrison then poured some turpentine, and rubbed the deceased and this appeared to afford him temporary relief. Mrs Cadush then sent for the doctor, but before his arrival, Hicks had breathed his last.

Deceased was well connected in Adelaide, of which city he was a native. He had received a good education, and at one time, held a good position in South Australia.

31 October 1888

A magisterial inquiry was held at the Shire Town Hall, Kerang, on Monday, by Mr. W. J. W. Patchell, J.P., to inquire into the cause of the death of John Hicks, who died suddenly on Sunday last. It appears the deceased has been employed by Mr. Joseph Cadusch, of the above hotel, for the past two years on and off, that he was of very intemperate habits, and on Satur- day night retired to his room in an intoxicated condition. He was about 28 years of age, and possessed a good education. He came here from Adelaide, where he appears to have been well connected and also held a good position. On the evidence of Dr. Austin, who held a post-mortem examination on the deceased, the magistrate recorded a verdict of death from acute pneumonia accelerated by diarrhoea.
