Biography

Dorothy Hinckley was born on October 12, 1617, in Oldham, Lancashire, England, her father, Isaac, was 46, and her mother, Dorothy, was 43. She married Radulphus (Ralph) Newby on May 22, 1636, in Easington, Durham, England. They had 11 children in 13 years. She died on October 14, 1711, in Dublin, Dublin, Ireland, at the impressive age of 94, and was buried there.

Dorothy was a Friend (Quaker)

Dorothy Hichley's parents are currently unknown. She first appears in her marriage record to Ralph Newby (Newbie) 22 May 1636 at Easington, Durham, England.[1]

"Her death is recorded in the Friends records in Dublin: Dorothy Newby, mother-in-law of William Norris, -- being very aged -- some avers one hundred years - deceased at the home of her son-in-law and was buried at Friends burial place near Stephens Green, 14 of 10 Mo. 1711. She was a woman of good report and orderly conversation, ready to serve the Truth and friends, in her station, whilst of ability. But for many years before she died was very weak and infirm yet very sensibly till near her departure, and we have cause to hope she died in peace with the Lord."[2]

Children

Researcher Larry Bell has noted that while William, Edward and Rachel were baptized in Easington, Durham it may be that they were born earlier at Earsdon, Northumberland.

William bap 14 Aug 1637 at Easington, Durham, England[3] It is noted that no record of this William Newby has ever been found in Dublin records.

Edward also bap 14 Aug 1637, Easington[3]

Rachel bap 30 Aug 1637, Easington[3]

Mark b 25 May 1638, Earsdon, Northumberland[4]

John bap 30 Aug 1637, Easington[3]

Elinor b Dec 1649, Ramside, Parish of Moorhouse, Durham, England [citation needed; Cook?]

Ralph bap 13 Oct 1650, Easington, Durham, England [citation needed]

Joseph b about 1654, Moorhouse, Durham [citation needed]

Isabella b 1650s [citations are indirect, need consolidation]

Research Notes

The following information originally in the bio of this profile and copied from Find-a-Grave is found suspect as the year of marriage stated is four years in error and no documentation is provided:

"Dorothy was the daughter of Isaac Hinchley. Her lineage can be traced back 8 generations to a Sir John Henclyve born in 1320 and appointed the sheriff of Staffordshire 1327-1330. Ralph and Dorothy were both 17 at the time of the marriage in 1629."[5] It should be noted that the only period documents with her maiden name give it as Hichley and not Hinchley.

In the only period documents found to date her maiden name is Hichley rather than Hinchley.
