Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Karl (Louis) was born in 1837. He was the eldest son of Prince Charles (Karl) of Hesse and by Rhein and Princess Elisabeth of Prussia. He married Princess Alice, a daughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, in 1862. He became the Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine in 1877. He passed away in 1892. He was great-grandfather of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
