Elisabeth Amalie von Hessen-Darmstadt, was born 20 March 1635 (old style) probably at Giessen, (although Marburg is mentioned in one source and Darmstadt is inscribed on her coffin plate)[1] the fifth child and third daughter of Georg II, Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt, and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Saxony. She may have been christened at Giessen on 5 April 1635.[2][citation needed]
Although brought up as a Lutheran, by her mother,[3] she converted to Catholicism either on 15/25 August 1653 or 1 November, just before or after her marriage. This was probably when she assumed the third name of Magdalene.[4]
She married by proxy 11 August and in person at Langenschwalbach 24 August/3 September 1653, as his second wife, Philipp Wilhelm, Count Palatine of Neuburg (Pfalzgraf bei Rhein von Neuburg).[5]

Johann Wilhelm Joseph, born 19 April 1658, succeeded his father as Elector Palatine;
Wolfgang Georg Friedrich, born 5 June 1659 at Düsseldorf, entered the church;
Ludwig Anton, born 9 June 1660 at Düsseldorf, entered the church;
Karl III Philipp, born 4 November 1661, succeeded his brother as Elector Palatine;
Alexander Sigmund, born 16 April 1663 at Neuburg, entered the chuch;
Franz Ludwig, born 26 July 1664[8] at Neuburg, entered the chuch;
Friedrich Wilhelm, born 20 July 1665 Düsseldorf, entered the church;
Maria Sophie Elisabeth, born 6 August 1666 at Schloss Benrath, near Düsseldorf, married Pedro II, King of Portugal;
Maria Anna, born 28 October 1667 at Schloss Benrath, married Carlos II, King of Spain;
Philipp Wilhelm August, born 18 November 1668[9] Neuburg, married and had issue;
Dorothea Sophie, born 5 July 1670[10] at Neuburg, married (1) Odoardo Farnese, Hereditary Prince of Parma; (2) Francesco I Farnese, Duke of Parma;
Hedwig Elisabeth Amalie, born 18 July 1673 Düsseldorf, married Jakob Ludwig Sobieski, Prince of Poland;
Johann, born 1 February 1675, Düsseldorf, died the following day;
Leopoldine Eleonore, born 27 May 1679 at Neuburg, died in Düsseldorf, 8 March 1693.
Her husband succeeded as Elector Palatine or Elector of the Palatinate (Kurfürst von der Pfalz) on 26 May 1685 and she became the Electress (Kurfürstin), but he died 12 September 1690 and was buried in the Jesuit Church at Neuburg an der Donau. She died at Neuburg an der Donau on 4 August 1709 and was buried in the same place.[11]
She apparently was attractive with striking blond hair, which she retained until her old age and passed on to several of her daughters.[3]
