Alice Childress was an American novelist, playwright, and actress, acknowledged as the only African-American woman to have written, produced, and published plays for four decades.

Alice Mary Herndon was born on October 12, 1916 in Charleston, South Carolina, United States.[1]

Alice (18) married Emory Alvin Childress (27) (born on September 15, 1907 in Meridian, Lauderdale, Mississippi, United States; son of John Cooper Childress and Beatrice C. Windham) on June 1, 1935 in New York City, New York.

In 1940, Alice was living in New York, New York. [2]

Alice (40) married Nathan Woodard (27) (born on May 20, 1929) in 1957.

Alice died on August 14, 1994 in New York, aged 77 from cancer. At the time of her death, Alice was working on a story about her African great-grandmother, Ani-Campbell, who had been a slave, and her Scots-Irish great-grandma. She was buried in Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, Suffolk County, New York.[1]
