William was born in 1830. He was the son of Benjamin Herndon and Jane Shaw. He passed away about 1878.
According to the census records of 1850 and 1860 he was a brickmason by trade. The 1870 census suggests he worked in a plow factory.

He married Martha Howard on December 5, 1856 in Fayette County, Tennessee.[4]
He is buried in the La Grange Cemetery in La Grange, Fayette County, Tennessee.[5]
