Biography
Robert Henley was the son of Leonard and Elizabeth Dandridge Henley and educated at the College of William and Mary in Virginia. He became a naval midshipman on 8 April 1799 and gained experience in the Quasi-War with France under Edward Preble's squadron. During the War of 1812, Henley was assigned to the Lake Champlain theater where he commanded the USS Eagle. It was for his valiant service in driving out the British in the Battle of Lake Champlain that he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.
