Biography

Tomb of John Heneage and his Wife[1]

Birth and Parentage

John Heneage, Esq. of Benniworth, Lincolnshire [2] was the 3rd son of John Heneage, of Hainton, Lincolnshire, by Katherine, daughter of Thomas Wymbish. He was born about 1485. [3]

Siblings:
1. Thomas Heneage
2. Robert Heneage

Marriage

John Heneage married, about 1520, Anne or Agnes Cope, widow of William Lovett, whom she had married before 3 Dec, 1513. [3] Calculated from John's birth in 1485, he would have been about 35 years old at the time of this marriage. She was the daughter of Edward Cope and Mary Wodhull.

Edward COPE Esq.
Born: 1466, Deanshanger, Northamptonshire[4]
Death: 01 May 1510, Deanshanger, Northamptonshire, England.[4]
Edward married Mary WODHULL in 1500 in Deanshanger, Northamptonshire, England.[4]
Mary Wodhull [see BRENT 13 RA Vol. I, pg 518], m. Edward Cope, Esq. of Helmdon, Torres, and Deanshanger (in Passenham), Northamptonshire, son and heir of John Cope, Esq. of Deanshanger (in Passenham), Northamptonshire, by his wife, Anne.[5]:
Child of Mary and Edward:
1. Anne (or Agnes) Cope, b. 1501; d. abt. 5 Feb 1588.

Some tertiary sources show John Heneage also married to an Emma Preston. Since his wife Anne survived him, such a marriage would could only have taken place before John's marriage to Anne in 1520. However, sources that display a Mary Heneage, child of this marriage, as born in 1548, [6] must, if true, be referencing another John Heneage, because in 1548 this John Heneage was married to Anne Cope.

Public Life

Justice of the Peace for Lincolnshire (Lindsay district), 1520-57, [3] Burgess (M.P.) for Great Grimsby, 1523, 1529, [3] Knight of the Shire for Lincolnshire, 1539, [3]

1529. After the fall of Wolsey in 1529, he was appointed a commissioner to enquire into the cardinal’s possessions in Lincolnshire. [3]

John Heneage was MP for Grimsby and worked closely with his father, a lawyer. He acted as a surveyor for the suppression of the monasteries, and in 1536 he was seized by an armed mob in the Lincolnshire Rebellion, but managed to escape. He purchased church lands and properties in Northants, Lincoln and London - he held some eight or ten properties between Louth and Market Rasen.[7] (Courtesy of Cheryl Caudill)

In 1536, while conducting the election of new town officers at Louth, Lincolnshire, he was seised by an armed mob. He and others were compelled to take an oath to be true to the commons. During the confusion caused by the arrival of further prisoners, he managed to escape. The same year he obtained a lease of the grange of Tows (in Ludford) and of lands there and in East and West Wykeham, Lincolnshire. [3]

In 1537 he obtained leases of the rectories of Randley (Ranby?) and Stainton, Lincolnshire. He obtained a lease of West Torrington, Lincolnshire in 1539. [3]

In 1540 he exchanged lands in Deanshanger (in Passenham), Puxley, and Wicken, Northamptonshire. The same year he paid nearly £100 for messuages in London, church lands in Lincolnshire, and the house and site of the White Friars, Hull, most of which property he sold the next year. [3]

In 1542 he took a lease of Willoughton preceptory, Lincolnshire, with a moiety of its rectory and windmill. [3]

Will and Death

John Heneage, Esq., died 21 July 1557, and was buried at Hainton, Lincolnshire. He left a will dated 2 July 1557, proved 25 July 1557 (P.C.C. 26 Wrastley). [3]

His widow, Anne (or Agnes), sold her estate at Helmdon, Northamptonshire in 1563.[3]

Hi, I would probably avoid the use of information found on the user trees on Ancestry, most of which is poorly researched.

For the Heneage family I have found the following to be accurate https://archive.org/details/lincolnshirepedi02madd/page/206/mode/2up I would imagine that the above-mentioned "Emma Preston" is probably confused with Eleanor Preston who married John Heneage in 1451. These were the grand parents of John Heneage = Ann Cope on page 482. On page 483 we see the three sons of john and Ann, Sir George (d.1594/5 PCC PROB 11/87/72), John and William(d.1610 PCC PROB 11/116/35). Also Katherine who married 1st Francis Holles (d.1543 PCC PROB 11/29/397) 2nd John Higford of Henwood (d.1558 PCC PROB 11/41/177) and3rd Sir John Hugford of Dixton (d.1607 PCC PROB 11/110/406). Katherine died at Dixton in Alderton Glouc in 1593.

Mary (Heneage) Lane (Heneage-25),John and Anne's second daughter married 1st Erasmus Cope by whom she had a son Sir Edward Cope. Mary married 2nd about 1557 Sir Thomas Andrewe of Charwelton (1563/4 PCC PROB 11/47/196) and 3rd in 1566 Sir Robert Lane of Horton. Mary took a lease on the manor of Broadwell, Glouc where she died in 1608. Her body was taken to Charwelton to be buried next to her 2nd husband Sir Thomas Andrewe. She left a will PCC PROB 11/113/424 which mentions Her son Sir Edward Cope(d.1620 PCC PROB 11/136/227), her sons by her second marriage Thomas Andrew (d.1609) and Richard Andrew. Another son Simon Andrew died unmarried before his mother (d.1596 PCC PROB 11/87/251) She also mentions her two daughters, Katherine (d. 1616 at Alderton, Glouc. PCC PROB 11/128/14) who married John Pleydell and Marie who married her third husband's son Sir William Lane of Horton, Northamptonshire. John Heneage's children are mentioned in the will of Ann Heneage( d.1586 Lincolnshire Wills First Series AD 1500 to 1600. Rev.A.R.Maddison p.110 no.302) Some of her grandchildren are also mentioned including Katherine Hawkins and Mary Brent who were the daughters of her daughter Katherine Hugford. Katherine Playdell is also mentioned.

Her brother Sir George Heneage in his will dated 15 Sept 1594 (PROB 11/87/72 National Archives, Kew) mentions his "loving sister, the Lady Lane" and his nephew "Mr.Edward Cope".

When the wills are read in detail and cross referenced, the various relationships become quite clear.

Both Richardson and the History of Parliament biography mention only one wife, Anne Cope, who survived John. The source of the added wife, "Emma Preston" is an unsourced family tree on Ancestry, so I'd suggest Emma be considered an error and dropped from the biography here! Thanks for your hard work on this bio!

Hi, Lynden -- both of the John Heneage profiles (57) and (30) represent a lot of work by you, so I'd defer to you to merge them, but I'm sure Anne Cope didn't marry two men with the same name!
