Ronald James Hendy, son of Edwin John Hendy, an engine crusher for the London and South Western Railway, and Ethel Clara Atkins, was born 24 January 1911 in Southampton, Hampshire, England. ^[1] The oldest of two siblings, Ronald spent his early childhood living with his parents at 26 Clifford Street in Southampton. ^[2] He spent his teens serving in the Merchant Navy, and was discharged 27 November 1928, aged seventeen. ^[3]

Ronald married Marjorie Alice Cole 24 September 1933 in Southampton. ^[4] They had two children, Jeffrey, born in 1936, and Keith born in 1939. Both boys were born in Southampton.

By the outbreak of war, on 29 September 1939 the family had moved to Grey Cottage, Mullen in Dorset. However, Ronald's record is still dedicated so it is unclear what work he was doing at the time. ^[5]

Ronald died in the June quarter of 1981 in Hythe, Hampshire, aged 70. ^[6]
