Biography

Thomas was born in about 1849.

He emigrated from Scotland to the Colony of Natal where he married Frances Mary Hillary on 13 February 1889 at Bellair, D'Urban, after Banns^[1]. His age was recorded as 27, he was a Bachelor, occupation Railway Guard. The witnesses were William Henry Marsh, Edith Louisa Hillary and James Hillary.

They had six children:

1. Hamblin James Hendry (b. 1890)
2. Norman Thomas Hendry (b. 1892, d. 20 Sept 1917)
3. Flora Frances Hendry (b. 1894)
4. Bernard John Hendry (b. 1896)
5. Rowland William Hendry (b. 1898, d. 10 Jan 1899)
6. Edwin George Hendry (b. 1 Sept 1903, d. 18 Feb 1964)

Tragically his son 2nd Lieutenant Norman Thomas Hendry died on 20 September 1917, killed in action in Belgium.

Thomas worked by the South African Railways. He was retired when he passed away in 1921 at the age of 72^[2]. Cause of death was recorded as Valvular Disease and Heart Failure. Intended place of burial was Pietermaritzburg.
