Notes for Willis HENDRIX:
Taken from Ellis County History (the basic 1892 Book) Dallas Pubilc
Library R972.4 E47
WILLIS HENDRIX, of Ellis county, was born in Georgia, May 17, 1822, a
son of Hildrey and Sophia HENDRIX, natives of South Carolina. They
emigrated to Georgia in an early day, where were subsequently deceased.
They were the parents of fourteen children, of whom our subject was the
sixth child, and the only one living in Texas. He came to this State in
January, 1879, locating in Ellis county, where he rented land two
years. He then bought a tract of 116 acres of raw land, which he has
since improved, and he now has eighty acres in cultivation.
Mr. HENDRIX was first married to Miss Laura H. TATE, a daughter of
Wilkins TATE, a Baptist minister of Georgia. By this marriage there
were eleven children, viz: John H., F. G. D., Sophia E., Jasper J.,
Samuel, William N., Eliza A., Elizabeth, Wilkins C., James and Jeff.
(NOTE: Louise was a daughter of Willis and Laura- family members still living that Willis Nelson and Louise were siblings).
Seven of the children reside in Texas, two in Arkansas and one in
Alabama. The wife and mother died November 22, 1866, and in May, 1867,
Mr. HENDRIX married Mrs. L. TATE, the widow of Theodore TATE, and
daughter of John W. KEITH, of Georgia. Mr. and Mrs. TATE had two
children, J. A., a practicing physician of Nash; and J. C., a farmer by
occupation. Mr. and Mrs. HENDRIX have had five children, four of whom
still survive, - Robert N., Travis M., Harvey H. and Benjamin F. Mr.
HENDRIX has also raised two grandchildren: John R. and Elizabeth
LINTON. Mr. HENDRIX has served as School Trustee, is a member of the
Masonic fraternity and the Alliance, is a Democrat politically, and a
Deacon of the Baptist Church.
In 1862 Mr.Willis HENDRIX enlisted in Captain White's Company, Thirty-sixth Georgia
Regiment, and served six months. He got sick and came home, after which
he substituted his son, who lost his arm in the service.
(Found Confederate Pension Record Reg #5385 for F. G. D. Hendrix. He
applied for a pension Brandon, Hill County, Texas on 7 July 1899 and
approved 7 Feb 1900. Lived in Brandon since spring 1879. He owned two
ponies worth $10.00 a piece, two cows worth $30.00 a piece, six hogs
worth $30.00. He was a farmer. He said he lost his arm at Bakers
Creek, Mississippi in battle. Jesse A. Glenn signed a statement for
him stating that he knew F. G. D. and he first meet him at London, Tenn.
in June 1862 when he joined the 36th GA. He now resides in Brandon,
Texas. He also says that he was a member of Co "C" 36th GA. Regt of which
I was Col. and was wounded at Bakers Creek, Miss. on the 16 May 1863,
and his arm was taken off during the seige of Vickburg. I do not know
his present financial condition. Some of these documents were signed
in Hillsboro, Texas.)
