Patsy (formally recorded as E.H. Hendren) was a cricketer, primarily a right handed batsman who played cricket for Middlesex and England. He made 833 first class appearances scoring 57,611 runs - only two players, Hobbs and Woolley have scored more. Hobbs alone scored more career centuries. Patsy made his Test debut for England in 1920. In 51 Test appearances he made 3,525 runs. He was also a right arm off-break bowler, taking 47 first class wickets including 1 test wicket.[1] His brother Denis Hendren played 9 first class matches for Middlesex.
He played football in the off-season, most predominantly for Brentford Football Club. As a teenager, he made two appearances in the Football League First Division for Manchester City. In his second spell for Brentford he made 399 appearances scoring 49 goals between 1911 and 1927. Many of these were in the Football League after Brentford became members in 1920. He retired from football in 1928 to concentrate on cricket. His one international appearance in the Victory International against Wales in 1919 is not counted as official.
Elias was born in 1889. He was the son of Denis Hendren and Dinah Mary, who were both born in England but likely had Irish parents (Denis certainly had an Irish mother, Bridget). Elias's birth was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1889 in the Brentford district.[2]
In the 1891 census, Elias (age 2) was the son of Denis Hendren in Chiswick, Middlesex, England.[3] A married aunt, Annie Cave was living with them. It is unclear if she was a sister of Denis or of Dinah.
Elias's father Denis died in 1897.
In the 1901 census, Elias (age 12) was the son of Dinah M Hendren in Chiswick, Middlesex, England.[4]
Elias's mother Dinah died in 1903.
By the end of the decade Elias was making a name for himself as a cricketer. Because he looked Irish and had Irish ancestors his team-mates jokingly called him Pat, and he adopted the name Patsy which he came to be known as in preference to his given names.
In the 1911 census, Elias (age 22), Professional cricketer, was a single boarder in Coventry, Warwickshire, England.[5]
Elias's marriage to Minnie M C Dykes was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1914 in the Fulham district.[6][7] They did not have children.
In 1916 his brother John was killed in action during the Battle of Delville Wood on the Somme.
In 1938 Patsy played his last match against Surrey at Lords before retiring. At the age of 48, he scored a century in the first innings (103 to be precise, though his second innings was a duck). The crowd serenaded him with "For He's A Jolly Good Fellow."
Elias's death (age 73) was registered in 1962 in London, England.[8]
Elias died on 4 October 1962 and was buried in East Finchley, London Borough of Barnet, Greater London, England.[9]
