One Critically Hurt

Author: FRED MOGUL; WORLD - HERALD STAFF WRITER A driver who apparently backed his car into oncoming traffic was in critical condition Sunday night after a three - car accident that sent four people to hospitals and closed part of Interstate 29 for about three hours.

Witnesses told police that the white Ford Thunderbird driven by Gene Heim, 71, of Dawson, Neb., was in the right - hand southbound lane of I - 29 when it began moving backward. Judging from the location, Heim may have been attempting to back up to the exit to Iowa Highway 192, which heads into Council Bluffs and becomes 16th Street.

A gray Ford Econoline van driven by Jesus Saenz, 35, of Omaha plowed into Heim's car, which spun clockwise into a third car, a Mitsubishi 300 GT driven by Douglas Saver, 29, also of Omaha.

Heim was taken by medical helicopter to University Hospital in Omaha, where he was in critical condition and was expected to undergo surgery Sunday night. His granddaughter, Chelsea Wheeler, 15, of Auburn, was treated and released at University Hospital.

Saenz and Saver both were treated and released from Jennie Edmundsen Hospital in Council Bluffs.

The accident, which occurred just before 6 p.m., diverted traffic off the Interstate and through Council Bluffs for three hours.

I - 29 Crash Victim Dies From Injuries

Gene Heim, 71, of Dawson, Neb., who was injured July 19 in a Council Bluffs traffic accident, died Thursday at Omaha's University Hospital.

Heim was the driver of a car that authorities said was apparently backing up on southbound Interstate 29 at the north edge of Council Bluffs. Authorities believe Heim may have been attempting to back up to the Iowa Highway 192 exit, which enters the Bluffs as North 16th Street.

Heim's car was struck from the rear by a van that then spun into another vehicle.

All of the other people involved in the accident were treated at hospitals and released, including Heim's granddaughter, Chelsea Wheeler, 15, of Auburn, Neb.

Police Capt. Larry McGlade said no tickets have been issued to other drivers, but investigation of the accident has not been completed.
