Biography

Born in Shelbyville on January 11, 1870 to Samuel Wilson Hegan and Sallie Caldwell.^[1] Alice was born in "the home of her maternal grandfather Judge James Caldwell".^[2]

Due to "delicate health" early in life, Alice was primarily home-schooled till she was ten years old, when her family moved to Louisville, KY and "she entered Miss Hampton's School for Girls".^[2]

Alice published her first novel Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch in 1901. During her lifetime she published twenty novels and great number of short stories.^[2]

Married Cale Young Rice (poet) in 1902^[3] and they resided "in the St. James Court area of Louisville but spent their summers in Maine".^[2][4][5][6]

Alice died in her home in Louisville in 1942 and was buried in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky..^[1][7]
