Biography

Sarah has long been erroneously tied to a James Matthews, but as discussed below, her first husband was named Thomas Matthews.

She is named in her father's will in August 1670.^[1]

The following is taken from Findagrave, written by Kevin Avery:

"The proposed union of Thomas Matthews and Sarah Hedge is discussed in detail in The Great Migration, Volume 5, pgs 93-95. Previous theories that Sarah married a James Matthews Jr are negated therein.

Two children have customarily been assigned to the probably non-existent James Matthews Jr:

1) Benjamin Matthews, b.c1668, who married Hannah Rider on Jan 16,1698/9. Benjamin died at Yarmouth,MA on Nov 4,1741.

2) Mary Matthews, b.c1670, who married John Howes on Jul 8,1691.

I believe there may have been more children of Thomas and Sarah, as I have seen some individuals referred to as "son (or daughter) of Thomas Matthews of Yarmouth" within the appropriate time frame.

The second marriage of Sarah is found in The American Genealogist, Volume 80 (2005), pg.134, where it states that Sarah Matthews, widow of Thomas, married Joseph Rider at Yarmouth,MA on Jan 20,1703/4. Joseph was the son of Samuel Rider and Anne Gamlett Rider. His first wife was not known, and he died at Yarmouth,MA on Jan 20,1717/8. Wife Sarah was named in his will of Feb 14,1707/8."
