James was born on 21 August 1746 in Bradford, Essex, Massachusetts, USA. He was the son of John Head and Mehitable Gage. [1]

April 19, 1775 to Cambridge under the command of Sergeant Abel Kimball. He served six days with Lieutenant Abel Kimball in Gloucester to prevent the enemy from retaking a brig laden with warlike stores that was bound from Great Britain to Boston, which was captured and brought to Gloucester 29 November 1775. He also served under Lieutenant Abel Kimball's detachment that was sworn in at Andover, Massachusetts on 22 March 1776.[2][3]
When James was 33 he married Hepzibah Dow on 18 January 1780 in Newburyport, Essex, Massachusetts, USA. [4][5]

Per family bible of James' grandson George Stickney Head (abt.1819-1887), James died at the age of 41 on 14 February 1788 in Pembroke, Merrimack, New Hampshire. However, in the 1790 census James (age 43) was living in Pembrook, Rockingham, New Hampshire, United States. [6] James' burial location is unknown, however, there is a Find A Grave memorial for him.
