Before the war, the Hazard family lived next door to the Mero family, including Andrew H. Mero of Company B.
He stood about 5 foot 3 inches (1.6m) tall with a black complexion, black eyes and black hair when he enlisted with the military in 1863.[2]
During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company G of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, the second[3] regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 30 years old when he enlisted from Woodstock, Vermont on 29 December 1863. Mustered out 20 August 1865 in Woodstock, Vermont.[4] His brother, Austin, served in Company B.
James struggled with deafness as a result of his military service.
He passed away in 1890 and is buried at the River Street Cemetery in Woodstock, Vermont.[5]
