Granville Newton Haynes, born on April 30, 1880 in Moore County, Tennessee, was a son of John Franklin Haynes and Sarah Elizabeth Walker. He was a month old when he was counted on the 1880 census with them in Moore County Tennessee. Their neighbors were Busbees, Walkers, Leslies, Hills, Taylors and other families related by marriage.[1]
Neither he nor his parents have yet been located on the 1900 census, but he was most likely still living in Moore County, Tennessee, as he married there in 1901.
He married Ida Zinkie Bean Tipps, a widow with four children, on September 3, 1901 in Moore, Tennessee.[2]
In 1910, their combined family was counted on the census in Winchester, Tennessee, with four children from his wife's previous marriage and the first two daughters from their marriage.[4]
They were living in Winchester when he registered for the draft during WWI. He was described as married, having light hair and blue eyes, and was of medium size with no disabilities. The document says he was age 37 and born in 1881. But unless he was named after a brother born in April of the year before him, it's quite possible he grew up thinking he was a year younger than he was.[5]
In 1920, he and Zinkie were living in Winchester with all three daughters and his youngest stepdaughter.[6]
By 1930, only their youngest daughter was still living at home with them in Winchester.[7]
And by 1940, only Zinkie and Granville remained in their home in Winchester.[8]
He died in Winchester, Tennessee in 1964,[9]
and was buried at Winchester City Cemetery in Winchester, Tennessee.[10]
Research Notes
There are conflicting birth years on his draft registration (Apr 1881) and the 1880 census (age 1mo.- Apr 1880). The draft registration document says he was age 37 in September of 1918, and born in April of 1881. But unless he was named after a brother born in April of 1880 (and who died soon after), it's possible (and not unheard of) that Granville grew up thinking he was a year younger than he was. No evidence of a namesake brother has yet surfaced. I'm going with the year on the census, as it wouldn't have been possible to count him if he were born in 1881, and the proximity of several neighboring inter-related families strongly suggests that this is the correct Haynes family. The writer of his Find a Grave Memorial agrees.
