John, the son of Thomas Haydon and Hannah Kirke was born on 17 May 1728 at Northumberland, Virginia.

John married Lucy Morton (1745-1811), the daughter of John and Sarah (Hawkins) Morton on 31 January 1765 at Spotsylvania, Virginia. They had thirteen children:
