Biography

Margaret Hawxwell met Richard, her husband to be, in 1939, during the Second World War, while they were both working in Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in Billingham. On 13th September 1941 they were married at Yarm Parish Church.

In 1944 Margaret gave birth to a daughter (Jane), followed by two sons, Peter (1948) and Bill (1950). As the war was ending in Europe in March 1945, Margaret accompanied her husband Richard on his secondment by His Majesty's Government (HMG) to work in Düsseldorf, Germany. The precise details of Richard's mission were classified but it is understood he was trying to secure knowledge of just how far Germany had got down the road to the then holy grail of nuclear physics, a nuclear bomb.

Margaret and Richard lived in the North East of England in Bank Road in Billingham in the early/mid 1950s, Norton Green in Stockton on Tees in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Castle Close in Middleton St George in the 1960s and early 1970s and thereafter in Worsall Road Yarm.

Sadly Margaret suffered from a brain haemorrhage in the early seventies but survived for more than 20 years after a slow partial recovery lasting a few years. Margaret was able to walk to the family antiquarian bookshop at 26 High Street Yarm from the bungalow which they bought in Worsall Road to save her having to go up any stairs and afford her relatively easy access to Yarm.

Margaret is portrayed as Sara Burlington in Beyond Enkription, the first novel in the autobiographical spy series called The Burlington Files, based on the life of her youngest son. In addition, various hilarious and/or perilous moments in her real life are recorded in [1]. (See also [2] and [3].)

Margaret was born in 1918. She is the daughter of Frank Hawxwell and Annie Taylor.
