Biography

Dr. Alfred Joseph Haviland, a Surgeon, was the son of Dr. James Haviland & Harriet Cobley Haydon. Born 1824, he corresponded with cousin Frederick Haviland about the Haviland Genealogy. He married 1856 to Mary Ann "Amy" Pain. He died Jun 1903 in Surrey, England. [1] [2]

Per researcher Nigel Richardson in the archives of the Haviland - de Havilland Heritage Society:

Dr Alfred Haviland is someone whom I have been researching for some time. I established that he was a member of a well-known medical family in Bridgwater, Somerset, and that as the result of a poisoned finger to had to give up surgery in the early 1870s. He then became the first Medical Officer of Health for the Northamptonshire Districts in 1873 – which is the reason why I came into contact with him. In this post he was responsible for, amongst other towns, Uppingham. For many years I worked at the well-known boarding school there, and in 1975/76 I wrote a number of articles and a documentary play to celebrate the centenary of a typhoid outbreak at the School. Several pupils died, and the Town authorities blamed the school for poorly constructed buildings. The School in its turn blamed the Town for inadequate sewerage, and poorly maintained drains. Dr Haviland was one of the key figures on the Town's side, producing a scathing report which criticized the then Headmaster, the Reverend Edward Thring, who is one of the best-known figures in Victorian education on this side of the Atlantic. As a result of the deadlock which then followed, the school took itself off to the Welsh coast for an entire year, where pupils and staff were boarded out in a large hotel and about 24 small houses. It is a very striking story, and one which seems to be almost unique in the history of schools over here. For some time now I have been interested in turning it into either a doctoral thesis or a book or both; my current feeling is that, having completed most of the research, a book would be better. The antipathy between Thring and Haviland is a key feature of this; I have some sympathies with both sides, but it seemed clear to me that both men were of a type who did not brook disagreement easily! The comments on your website about cousin John Haviland being 'an arrogant man', seemed to me to be quite a good summary – probably – of Alfred as well – and of Thring, in a different way.

On the other hand there is no doubt that Alfred was a man of many parts. He is often credited with being the pioneer of medical mapping ... and he wrote a whole series of learned articles on a wide variety of topics. I have established that he died in Surrey in June 1903; both the British Medical Journal and The Lancet carried obituaries of him. [3]
