Biography

Lila Abigail (Hatten) Fenton (see research notes regarding the names) was born on 5 Aug 1896[1] in Desboro, Chatsworth Township, Grey County, Ontario (see research note regarding the place of birth) to Kingston Kennedy Hatten (abt.1873-abt.1940) and Emma Ellen (Agnew) Hatten (1874-1952)[1][2][3].

Lila married Alexander L Fenton on 13 Sep 1916 in Owen Sound, Grey County, Ontario, Canada[2].  The couple had at least two children, Jack Fenton, b. ~1920[4], and a daughter, Betty (Hatten) Legate[citation needed].

Lila died on 13 Apr 1989[5][6], place unknown but she was buried in Chesley Cemetery, Chesley, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada[6].

Research Notes

  1. Desboro is a village about 35 km. NNE of Chesley and 40 km. SSW of Owen Sound.  Mooresburg (little more than a hand full of houses) is about 5 km. due south of Desboro.
  2. The place of birth has conflicting sources.  The birth record[1] says Lila was born in Sullivan Township, Grey County, Ontario whereas the marriage record[2] states that was born in Desboro, Chatsworth Township, Grey County, Ontario.  This is likely to be a case of different names for the same place.  The current township (of Chatsworth) was formed in late year 2000 with the amalgamation of Holland Township, Sullivan Township, and the village of Chatsworth (Wikipedia).  The 1901 census[3] show the family living in Desboro so Desboro has been used.
  3. There is conflict between the sources as to the spelling of the first name.  The name chiseled into the gravestone[6] {Lila} has been used.
  4. Lila's middle name starts with "A."[2].  That "A." stands for Abigail is unsourced.
  5. The last name is frequently misspelled "Hatton".  This is a misunderstanding of verbal conversations.  The "Hatten" spelling is anchored by the gravestone[6] and the family history[5].
