Biography

She passed away in 1750.

Rebecca Harwar (Harroway) was born in the Virginia Colony about 1680. She was the daughter of Samuel Harwar and Anne Killman. About 1699, she married Thomas Hines in South Farnham Parish.[1]

Children of Rebecca and Thomas:

  1. John Hines
  2. Elizabeth Hines

Thomas died in 1709, leaving a will (22 Sep 1709; 10 Oct 1709). Rebecca was named his executrix, and she paid bond of £400 sterling on 10 Oct 1709.[2]

According to marriage records, Rebecca married Vincent Godfrey Pyles/Piles in 1723.[3] This date cannot be correct—perhaps it was a transcription error and should read 1713—as son Samuel was born by 1717, assuming he would have been 21 years of age by May 1738 when the following indenture was made (even if he was only 18 at the time of the indenture, he would have been born by 1720).

-----This indenture made the Seventeenth day of May 1738 Between Samuel Piles of South farnham Parish in Essex County of the one part and Ludde Virns [Ludovicus] Moarias Piles Witnesseth that he the said Samuel Piles for sum of Five pounds current money and allso for rents and Covenants hereafter expressed has granted to farm let unto the said Lude Virns [Ludovicus] Morias Piles a parcel of land in the County of Essex on the South side of the Rappa. River near the Ferry on Piscataway Creek being part of a tract of land formerly belonging to Harry Harrowway & now in the possession of Rebecca Piles meaning all that part of the sd Tract that lies on ye Norwest side of a Main road running from an Old Mill called Covingtons Mill down to Piscattaway Ferry containing Fifty acres and upon demand to be in tennor of ye said Lude Virus Moarias Piles or his assigns and allso all woods whatsoever to the same belonging to hold the said Fifty acres of land for and during the natural lifes of said Ludee Virns Moarias Piles and Anne his present Wife & he the sd Lude Virne Moarias Piles paying the rent therefore on the tenth day of October in every year dureing their sd Natural lifes the rent of one year of Indian Corn if lawfully demanded and allso the Quitrents that become due to his Majesties King George.

-----At a Court continued and held for Essex County at Tappa. on the MCDXXXIII day of May MDCCXXXVIII Samuel Piles acknowledged this Lease Indenture to be his act and deed which is admitted to record.

We know Samuel was Rebecca's son based on the below deed of 18 Jun 1723.

This indenture made the eighteenth day of June 1723 between Henry Harway of South Farnham Parish in County of Essex Planter of one part & Vincent Godgrey Pile of Parish & County aforesaid, Wheelwright, witnesseth that sd Henry Harway for & in consideration of the natural Love & affection he hath unto the sd Vincent Godfrey Pile & Rebecca his wife, Sister to the sd Henry Harway & unto Samuel Pile Sonne of the sd Vincent Godfrey Pile & Rebecca his Wife & Godchild of the said Henry Harway. . .

Children of Rebecca and Vincent:

  1. Samuel Pyles
  2. Ludovicus Morias Pyles

In late 1723, Rebecca's brother Henry died leaving a will dated 6 Sep 1723, "Unto my sister Rebecca Piles all the rest of my estate." Vincent Piles was named as executor.[4]

Rebecca's husband Vincent died in 1737, Rebecca was made administrator of his estate.[5]

Rebecca died before 19 Feb 1750, when son Ludovicus was made administrator of her estate.[6]

Harway-1 and Harwar-63 appear to represent the same person because: Alternate spellings of the surname but still a duplicate of this wife of Vincent so they should be merged
