Bertha T. Hartzel was born 12 Jul 1900 in the state of Pennsylvania. Her parents were John and Mamie Hartzell.
She was married to Travis Redman Jr. (1894 - 1975) from Illinois. Together they had one son mentioned below; and four other children, all daughters... and four grandchildren.
Bertha Redman, is a "Gold Star Mother" who turned her own sorrow into an opportunity to serve. Redman’s only son, Coast Guard SN2 Travis B. Redman, was killed in a plane crash off the coast of Florida on 29 September 1940.
Determined to carry on her son’s legacy, Bertha enlisted in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) in December 1943. “I want to carry on as Travis would have done,” she said after enlisting. “I’ll do the best I can. Redman served until June 1945[1].
Bertha (Hartzel) Redman passed away on 23 May 1982 at the age of 81. She is buried at Bay Pines National Cemetery in Pinellas County, FL.
