17 May 1914: Jonathan Hartman, one of the oldest residents of Millcreek Township, was found dead shortly before four o'clock Saturday afternoon, in his bedroom, at the home of his grandson, Harry Layser, one mile northwest of Richland. He had been in failing as a result of his advanced age of 88 years, and for some time had not been in possession of accustomed mental facilities. His early days were spent at farming, and later became a cobbler. Still later he built a hotel in Richland, of which he managed for many years. Following the death of his wife, he lived for eight years with his daughter, Mrs. John Layser, of Richland, and then took up his final residence with his grandson. He was a member of the Lutheran Church at Millbach. He leaves a son, John G. Hartman, bookkeeper for the New Lebanon Brewing Company; 14 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. His funeral will be on Wednesday, and interment will be in the Millbach Church Cemetery. [Lebanon Daily News]
