During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company B of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was 36 years old, married and working as a farmer when he enlisted on 9 March 1863 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mustered out 20 August 1865 with his regiment.[1]
Note: There are a number of men named William H. Harrison in several companies of the 54th Massachusetts.

On 8 April 1863, he was detailed for extra duty as a nurse at the training camp hospital.[2]
