Biography
James Arnold Harris was born about 25 May 1897 in Mingelo near Peak Hill, New South Wales, Australia, son of William Harris ( –abt. 1906) and Alice (O'Sullivan) Foulkes (1862–1937). [1]
At age 18 was working as a Farm labourer and living at Peak Hill, when he enlisted in the AIF on 1 Feb 1916 in Liverpool, New South Wales and served with the 36th Australian Infantry Battalion C Company. His unit embarked Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A72 *Beltana* on 13 May 1916
On 30 April 1918 while still serving with the 36th, he was promoted to . He then went on to serve in the 33rd Battalion and was injured in France with a gun shot wound in Sept 1918, and admitted to Beaufort War Hospital in Brighton, and discharged from hospital in Oct 1918 shortly before the end of the war. James Harris was Wounded in Action during World War I.
He did not return to France, remaining in the UK. In April 1919 he was granted leave with pay to assist with farming in Scotland until Sept 1919. He was then granted further leave without pay, and was living in Manchester, until departing England in October 1919 to return to Australia
James died on 25 May 1970 in Peak Hill, New South Wales, aged about 73. [6]
He is buried at Peak Hill Cemetery, RC portion [7]
