Biography

Birth

Born: Before 1513, he was of Hatherup, Gloucestershire, England.[1]
Estimate based on marriage and birth of children. He could have been born significantly before this date.

Marriage and Children

Married: Anne Unknown before 1533.
He had an adult daughter who was married with a child when he made his will in 1553. It is reasonable to assume he was married before 1533.
Children of John and Anne Harris:
The following children were named in his will dated 1553:
  1. Alice (Harris) Wynchcumbe. Born by 1533 (based on her marriage and birth of first child).
  2. William Harris. Married 1st Katherine Kiche on 21 November 1568; married 2nd Agnes Mason on 30 January 1579. He died about November 1599.
  3. John Harris

Death

Died: Between 22 Oct. 1553 and 4 June 1554, presumably in Hatherup, Gloucestershire, England.
Dates his will was made and proved.
Will: of John Harris, yeoman, of Hatherup, Gloucestershire.
Made 22 Oct. 1553 and proved 4 June 1554
John made his will 22 Oct. 1553 and gave the lease on his house he lived in to his daughter Alice Wynchcomb and if she died before it expired, the remainder of the term to then go to her daughter. His sons William and John Harris received 72 acres of land occupied by William Carney, a sheep pasture as well as ten sheep and a bullock each. The remainder of his estate went to his wife Anne who was his executrix. Overseers of the will were John Sermon, John Fathers and John Chapleyn. The will was witnessed by John George, William Manne and John Sermon.[1]
His wife Anne (Annis) made her will on 17 June 1585 and gave her daughter Alice Winchkome a new gown and three sheets. She gave other small gifts to Anne, James, John and Thomas Winchkome, William Harris the younger, Anthony Harris and John Harris the younger, Joan Reve, Alice Kirbie, George and Marie Vincen and Elizabeth Robins. The remainder of her estate was given to Richard Harris (her grandson) who was made her executor.[1]

Common Errors to Avoid

Incorrect parents: It is sometimes found on the internet and this profile previously had his parents as Arthur Harris and Joan Percy. This is incorrect. Very little is known of this John Harris outside of his will and there is absolutely no reason to think that Arthur Harris was his father. Furthermore, it is very easy show the connection is chronologically impossible. The supposed father of Joan Percy was born c. 1504; he certainly cannot be the grandfather of someone born before 1513.

There seems to be a new duplicate of this profile: Harris-41019

PGM may want to deal with it.

I don't think they are meant to be the same person. John Harris-2786 of Hatherup did not have a wife Elizabeth or a son Robert, and nothing about the son and grandchildren of John Harris-41019 would seem to relate to the Hatherup family.

The error here is the birth date and birth place of john Harris-41019 is undoubtedly wrong, and incorrectly borrowed from John Harris-2786.

Ridiculous parents removed. This Harris line is extremely well-researched and his parents are unknown.

Joan Percy Harris could not have been born before 1526. She has brother born in 1528 and 1532. How then could she have a child born in 1513-John Harris. The birth dates in this line are mixed up and need reevaluation.
Harris-10131 and Harris-2786 appear to represent the same person because: All Data agrees.

p.s. Although this John Harris is a match with John Harris-10132, the profiles for their mothers don't match so well. When you merge the sons, I'd recommend keeping Percy-48 as the mother, but don't propose a merge (they're already in an unmerged match). Thanks!

joe - I think you meant to post a reply about the more recent merge proposal, with Harris-41019. This one, with Harris-10132, is from 2014 & has long since been completed.

Cheers, Liz
