Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Edward Harrington was a Virginia colonist.

Note: Not the same man as Edward who died in Jamestown in 1607.[1]

1590, Bath, Somerset, England[3]

Event

Arrival 1643, Virginia

Residence

1651, Virginia Colony[4]

Death

1653, Northhampton, Virginia[5]

Will

Will: 1653 Northampton Co VA. Edward Harrington (1594-1653) mentions three children in his will[6]
  1. Mary (1616-?)[7]
  2. William (1620-?)
  3. Thomas (1625-1713)
All of the children were born in Northampton County, Virginia. Edward arrived in Virginia with Captain Samuel Mathews, Esq.
He married an unknown person in 1619 in Northampton County, Virginia.

He signed the "Faith to England" in 1651 with Francis Flood, John Coulson and Richard Hill, Samuel Jones, Thomas Savage and Wm. Luddington.

Research Notes

Detached parents John Harington and Mary Elizabeth Rogers. They are probably the parents of the Edward who died in Jamestown August 1607.
From this newspaper article on Jamestown archaeological dig that uncovered grave with two bodies, believed to be Edward Harrington & George Walker, said by Percy to have been buried together on the same day, "A Grave Story, Part 2 | Talking bones," by Diane Tennant, The Virginian-Pilot, Nov. 27, 2006:
An Edward Harrington was christened Oct. 1, 1582, in Huntingdonshire, making him 24 on Aug. 24, 1607. A George Walker was christened Dec. 24, 1567, in Staffordshire, making him 39 in 1607. Although the names were so common in England that there remains some doubt as to exact identity, those two fit the ages as estimated from the bones, and they fit the eyewitness report of Percy : "The four and twentieth day, died Edward Harrington and George Walker, and were buried the same day."
(Probably the other Edward was marked as a Baron.) The Harrington family apparently lost the title of "Baron" before Edward was born, so "Baron" was removed from the suffix field for this profile.
"On the death of the 5th baron in 1458, the barony was inherited by the heir to the barony of Bonville, with which title it merged in 1461, until both baronies were forfeited in 1554."[8]

Looked through all the sources I found on Harington-46 & his wife (not sure about Edward... seems he could have been theirs, but not born 1584). I also realized that the Rogers profile was protected & sources indicated it's the correct spelling for the mother that was detached (Rogers-1153), so I reproposed that merge.

Cheers, Liz

hmmm. I just was re-looking the info for Harington-212 and added as birth location Herefordshire (based on the research done by Diane Tennant for her article on the Edward Harington who died Aug. 24, 1607). Then looked at where the parents attached to that profile/detached from this one were born... Somerset. Which would argue that they are this Edward's parents, not that one's.

Anyone have any sources for the parents (this one or that one)?

update: done.

Hi y'all! I was doing a last search for duplicates and/or profiles for Edward died 1607. I found a probable duplicate with the single r spelling. I propose detaching the parents of this Edward ([Harrington-322]) and proposing merges with their counterparts attached to Harington-212 & then revising this profile to be husband of Elizabeth & father of her children. On my schedule for this evening unless anyone has an objection. (No one did before... just double-checking.)

Cheers, Liz

so... this profile appears to have combined the Edward who died in Jamestown 1607 with the one who married Elizabeth and had a will dated 1653. I don't see a WikiTree profile for an Edward who died 1653. OK to make one to be husband of Elizabeth & father to her kids?

I posted in G2G/ copy here:

found one site that listed his death: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamestown_Colonists

an answer to the G2G question says other Jamestown residents put his death as 1607 & that the Edward Harrington who immigrated in 1643 with Elizabeth was a different man. See the G2G comment.

wow - sorry for the delay in responding! Yup, if the barony was lost before him, he shouldn't have the Baron title. I'll edit the profile to reflect that. Thanks!

The Baron was there when I came on. It appears that the title was lost before Edward was born. Should it be removed?

where does the "Baron" come from? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baron_Harington says: "On the death of the 5th baron in 1458, the barony was inherited by the heir to the barony of Bonville, with which title it merged in 1461, until both baronies were forfeited in 1554."
