Biography
HARPER, Charles. b . 30.1.1799 (England), d. 2.11.1872 (Toodyay), arr. 23.12.1837 per Eleanor, m. 15.6.1837 (England) Julia Gretchen LUKIN b. 27.7.1812 d. 9.8.1898 (Toodyay). Chd. Julia b. 1838 d. 1889, Isabella d. infancy 1839 Toodyay, Mary b. 1840 d. 1917, Charles b. 1842 d. 1912, Sarah b. 1844 d. 1928.
He trained as a solicitor and immigrated to Western Australia because of the attractive terms for granting land. His brother in law had previously immigrated to the colony.
They first resided at Guildford.
In 1838 they moved to Spring Hill near Northam.
Leased "Nardie" from Lloyd at Toodyay 1839 &-engaged in pastoral activities until 1856 when he moved to his home "Braybrook" built in Newcastle (Toodyay).
Registrar of Births, Marriages & Deaths for Toodyay district 1841.
Studied for ministry & was ordained CIE at Adelaide.
1849. Appointed Chaplain to Toodyay Convict Depot. He became the first Anglican Rector in Toodyay and held the position for 23 years.
1851: President of Newcastle Mech. Inst. Employed 19 T/L men.
1859-1871 on various occaaions. His parish extended to Northam & York. His wife & dtrs. conducted Sunday School & also a private school in their home.
He is buried in Toodyay Cemetery.
