She was the daughter of Stewart Sanford and Esther (Kennedy) Hardin. Her siblings included Melville Coxe, Arthur, and Lee Hardin.
She married August Harmon, 18 November 1900 in Coffeyburg, Missouri.
She was the mother of Dr. Paul Harmon.
In September 1943, it was announced in her local newspaper that her nephew, Major Stuart Hardin, was appointed to military governorship. He is the son of her brother Melville Coxe "M.C." Hardin. This helps solidify proof that this Effie Hardin was Effie Harmon, as her parents names are not on her death certificate, and Effie is often confused with other Effie Hardins in the same area.
She owned an apartment house at 105 South Wilbur Avenue and Hayden Street in Sayre, Pennsylvania that caught fire in the winter of 1943 or 1944. The damage was estimated to be between $60,000 and $80,000. She was coincidentally in Chicago at the time. She also owned an apartment house there.
She passed away in the LaSalle Hotel Fire in Chicago, Illinois. She had left her home in Sayre for Chicago in order to make preparations to move to West Virginia with her son Paul and his wife. He had left Sayre 6 months previously. After Effie's death, her hotel room was looted. Jewelry was missing, including a $2,000 diamond ring, a diamond studded wrist watch, and a ring with a diamond weighing one and a half carats - believed to be taken off of Effie's body.
