Biography

The sixth child born to James Hardin and Mary Dixon was Jefferson Davis Hardin, born Sep. 7, 1861.

Jeff lived in Perry, Oklahoma, in January 1894, and Junction, Texas, by fall. He worked with cattle in Kansas during the year of 1886. Jeff was in Bastrop, Texas, trading saddles when a deal went bad, and Jeff was shot in a gunfight in the top part of the right lung. He rode without medical attention to Austin, where a friend took him to Junction by wagon to his brother Gip's place, where he rested and was returned to good health.

Jeff was made the man of the house when his two brothers were gone, and his father died, forcing him to make a living any way he could. He was one of the few men in his time that didn't wear a gun every day.

Jeff married first, to a woman who died after only six months of marriage. He re-married to Creed Taylor's daughter, Mary Jane Taylor who later called herself "May", on Oct. 26, 1896, in Junction, Kimble County, Texas. They had three sons: Joseph Gipson Hardin called "Sug" born Aug. 29, 1897 in Noxville, Kimble County, Texas, Cleburn Hardin called "Cleve" born July 5, 1899 - possibly in Cleburne, Texas - a little town he was named for, and Jefferson Davis Hardin called "Buster" born Apr. 2, 1902 possibly in Clairemont, Kent County, Texas. Jeff settled there close to his uncle Benjamin Colombus Hardin who was son of Robert E. Hardin of Brenham, Texas.

Jefferson Davis Hardin died sometime between Sep. 14, and Nov. 27, 1901., and was buried in Clairmont Cemetery. Jeff had four lots in Clairemont, and on them was a livery stable and beer hall. Unfortunately for Jeff, he was killed by John Snowden, Uncle Ben's son-in-law. Jeff was buried in the Clairemont Cemetery, near the plot of his uncle. After the death of Jeff, Mary went to her father's in Noxville, Kimble Co., Texas in Feb. of 1902 where her father deeds her 120 acres of land. Her third son is born in April. After a few years, she remarried and lived for many years. [1]
