He was a professor.[6] In 1858, he taught at the Wesleyan Female College in Murfreesboro, North Carolina.[7]
He was also an author and a composer. In 1851, he published sheet music for "There Liv'd on the Banks of a Smooth Flowing River"[8] and "Wait for the Wagon."[9] In 1853, he published sheet music for "Old Bob Ridley."[10]He wrote a novel, Wallannah: A Colonial Romance. The book is set in New Bern, North Carolina.[11] It was published by B. F. Johnson Pub. Vo. in 1902.[12][13]
In 1870, he and his family lived in Williamston, Martin County, North Carolina.[14] In 1880, they lived in Snow Hill, Greene County, North Carolina.[15]
William died on 6 January 1882 in Snow Hill, Greene County, North Carolina.[16] He was buried in Maplewood Cemetery, Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina.[17]
