Research Notes
- The 1870 census only lists one James Harden who is Black in Augusta County, Virginia, so it seems probable this is the correct person, but he is living alone. His occupation is farm laborer so perhaps he was living separately from his family for work, or the census failed to list his family for some reason. His wife Caroline does not appear in the 1870 census in Augusta County under her maiden or married surname.
