Gordon Hall Hardcastle was born on 9th October 1921 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was the youngest son of Edgar Hardcastle and Josephine Leslie unknown. [1] The family later moved back to New South Wales, settling in Rose Bay, on the southern shore of Sydney Harbour. [2]
On 11th July 1942 at Gherang, Victoria, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Second Australian Imperial Force (AIF) for service overseas during the Second World War. His final AIF appointment was to the 1st Australian Tank Battalion, Australian Army Armoured Corps. [3]
Following war's end in August 1945, Gordon opted to transfer to the Commonwealth Military Force and continue his military career. [3]
Gordon married Rosemary Boase on 7th June 1949 in St Mark's Church of England (Anglican Church), Darling Point, New South Wales. [4] The Sydney Morning Herald reported that 'They had a Naval Guard of Honour for this wedding between the daughter of a Major General and a serving Army Major who was then posted as an Air Liaison Officer on Australia's new aircraft carrier, HMAS Sydney.' [2] Gordon's brother, John, was his Best Man.

Gordon was captured in a 1949 photograph sitting in the observer's seat of an RAN Fairey Firefly number 234, promoting the purchase of Australia's new aircraft carrier, HMAS' Sydney. [5]
He retired from the Army on 13th October 1968, following a 26-year career, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel; aged just 47 years. [3]
