Biography

Julia M. Hansen was the daughter of Captain Neils Hansen 1854 - 1941 and Mrs Delia (Bodelia) Hansen (nee Kiernan) 1858 - 1927.

In March 1901 she married the famous race cyclist Joe Megson at St. Stephen's Church in Newtown, Sydney, New South Wales Australia.

From the Sydney Sportsman newspaper of Wednesday 20 March 1901 we see a marriage notice below:

There is, perhaps, no name better known in Australian cycling circles than "Joe Megson," and his many acquaintances will not be surprised nor sorry to hear that yesterday he took a serious step in life, and was married to the jolly, fascinating, and fine-looking eldest daughter of genial Cap-tain Hansen, of the S.S. Dunmore. The marriage was celebrated at St. Ste-phen's, Newtown, at 7.30 p.m. Mr. A. E. Remfry acting as best man. After-wards a large circle of friends were entertained at Sunnyside, Erskinsville, by Mrs. Hansen and Mrs. Megson in a right royal manner. Mr. and Mrs. Joe wlll, after their honeymoon, reside at Newtown. The Sportsman offers their congratulations on their good taste in selecting each other as partners for life, and wishes them all sorts of good luck. We know a good firm to buy small bicycles from when Joe is ready. We have it on good authority that although Joe will in future live at Newtown there is no chance of the, "Ramblers" win-ning him over as a member from the Aus-tralian Club.

Joe and Julia Megson would go on to have at least 3 children between: 1901 and 1905:

Joseph Neils Megson 27 December 1901-1986
FLORENCE D. Megson 1903-
JOHN Marshall Verner Megson 1905-1982

This is a birth notice in the The Daily Telegraph of Saturday 28 December 1901 for their first son:

MEGSON.— December 27, 1901, at her residence, 89 Gowrie-st., Newtown, the wife of Joseph Marshall Megson of a son (Joseph Neils).

Julia Megson passed away in April 1907 at the Sisters of the Community of the Little Company of Mary, Lewisham Private Hospital and was buried in the Rookwood General Cemetery, Rookwood, New South Wales.

From The Sydney Morning Herald of Saturday 27 April 1907 we see the Return Thanks posting from Joe Megson and Captain & Mrs Hansen below:
