Biography

Letitia (Hanlon) Barnes came free to the Colony of South Australia (1836-1900)

Letitia was born about 1815 the daughter of James and Ann (nee Donelly) in England. Though her death notice would indicate she was probably born about 1820.

The widow: HANLIN, Mrs James (nee Ann Donelly) (w), ch Jas, Letitia, Wm, Ellen arrived in SA 1840-03-10 on Tomatin from Greenock[1]

She married Edward Coman Powell in 1849 at Adelaide South Australia.[2]

In 1853 she remarried to John Baird in Adelaide.[4]

In 1858 we see: RADFORD, Robert married BAIRD, Letitia at Kapunda [6] Note Robert Avis Radford was popular Circus performer and publican from Van Diemen's land [7]

RADFORD Robert Avis, Letitia BAIRD, parents of child born 1859-05-24 named Robert Avis at Waterloo Plains. [8]

In 1866 we see a marriage between Letitia and a James William Tilby BARNES also at Kapunda. [9]

A death for a Letitia Barns is seen in the South Australian Births, Deaths and Marriages, and recorded in the newspapers of the day in April 1901. She is listed as being 80 years of age at the time of her death on the 24th of March 1901:

DEATHS.
BARNS.—On the 24th March, after a long and painful illness, Letitia Barns, of Hamilton, aged 80 years. A colonist of 62 years. At rest [10]
