Biography

Sarah was born about 1830[1][2] in Gorey,[1][2] County Wexford, Ireland. She was the daughter of Hugh Hanlon and Johanna Malone.

As a 19 year old Sarah was sent to Australia with her 15 year old sister Mary on the ship New Liverpool, arriving in Melbourne on 09 Aug 1849.[1] The New Liverpool was one of the infamous six ships which transported over 4,000 Irish Famine orphan girls as part of the Earl Grey scheme, relieving crowded workhouses in Ireland to provide cheap labour to the growing British colonies.

Sarah had employment arranged for the first three months with Joseph Burns of Melbourne, for an agreed sum of £6.[2]

Disputed research:

One record says Sarah "married George Clarke and had at least 4 children born in the Bendigo area," and that she died in 1875.[2]

This is unlikely to be the same person - see research notes, below.

Research Notes

Disambiguation:
As there was a second girl of similar age with the exact same name, any records found need checking for which girl they refer to!

  • The "other" Sarah Hanlon sailed from Liverpool to Victoria on the ship Ocean Home, arriving in Melbourne 30 Apr 1860. She was a 27 year old Irish born servant (born c. 1833).

  • Other records suggest the girl who arrived in 1860 was also born in Wexford
  • Marriage record found in Victoria for a Sarah Hanlon who married George Clare in 1865 (ref 4236/1865). NOT the daughter of Hugh & Johanna Hanlon - see below!
  • Death record found for Sarah Clare, died 1875 age 40, born Wexford, parents John & Sarah Hanlon, husband George Clare, ref. no. 10244/1875. See above.
  • Either Sarah Clare's death registration has inaccurate names for both parents (John & Sarah instead of Hugh & Johanna), or The Irish Famine Memorial record is mistaken in its claim that Sarah, daughter of Hugh, "married George Clarke and had at least 4 children born in the Bendigo area."[2] To estimate the likelihood of their research accuracy, one should remember they mistranscribed Sarah's surname as Hanlow, and her husband's as Clarke.
