Biography

Elta was born in 1896. She is the daughter of Jacob Handte and Fannie Wire.

Mrs. Elta Handte Blanchard, Well-Known Musician, Dies

Mrs. Elta Handte Blanchard, musician, composer and instructor of music for several years, died in an Asheville hospital Tuesday following a long illness.

A resident of 77 Blue Ridge Ave., West Asheville, Mrs. Blanchard was the founder of a junior music club (second oldest of its kind in the state), which was named in her honor.

A composer with numerous songs to her credit, she was a winner four different times in the North Carolina State Composers Contest.

She was organist of Central Methodist Church for several years, a former chairman of the National Guild of Piano Teachers of Western North Carolina, and treasurer of the Grace Potter Carroll Student Loan Fund of the Asheville Music Club.

Mrs. Blanchard was a former president of the National League of American Pen Women, Asheville Branch, and was the author of three books of poetry. Her last work, "Candle in the Heart," will be published later this year. Several of her articles on music were published by Etude Magazine.

A daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob S. Handte of Ohio, who moved to Asheville when she was a child, [[Handte-4|Mrs. Blanchard was the widow of Arta X. Blanchard. She leaves no known survivors.

Grace Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, which were incomplete Tuesday night.
