Biography

Ebenezer Hands was born sometime between January and March of 1838. His father, Ebenezer Hands was age 26 and his mother, Rebecca Baker was 24 years old. According to the Warwickshire Ancestors Project — 1891, Ebenezer's father was a Gun Stocker. In early census records Ebenezer is noted as an errand boy and in some records noted as a scholar. This would denote he was attending school and probably helping his father in his business. Since, Ebenezer also became a Gun Stocker by trade, he probably apprenticed for his father. In the Historical Occupations Index of Family Researchers [1] a gun stocker is described as follows: “Gun Stocker: a weapon maker. Produces and fitted wooden stocks to firearms”. According to the census information, Ebenezer moved his family several times and settled until his death in Aston Manor, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, United Kingdom. Along with his wife, Harriet Nicholls, he raised eight children. He lived a long life of 86 years.
