Newspaper reports of Mr. Hancox death:

Gloucester Citizen October 7, 1893

Mr. Joseph Hancox, of the Swan and Falcon Inn, Longsmith Street, Gloucester who fell into a tun of boiling malt on Friday, died early this morning. The announcement of his death under such distressing circumstances, will be received with great regret by a large circle of friends, Mr. Hancox being well known in the city and highly respected. He suffered intense pain and Mr. Firmin Cuthbert, who was in constant attendance during the day and night, did all he could to induce sleep, and late last night the patient appeared to be a little easier. Late in the night it was evident that he was gradually sinking, and at half past five this morning Mr. Cuthbert saw that he could not last much longer. Death took place a quarter of an hour later. An inquest will be held this evening.

The Gloucester Citizen Wednesday, October 11, 1893

The funeral of the late Joseph Hancox took place on Tuesday in the Cemetery. The officiating minister was Rev. J.E. Barton. A large number of friends of the deceased attended the funeral, and as a mark of respect to the memory of one who was so highly esteemed blinds were drawn and shops partially closed on the way to the Cemetery. The mournful procession was headed by representatives of the Norwich Union and the London and Liverpool and Globe Fire Brigades. Mr. Hancox was an honourary member of the Loyal Phoenix lodge of Oddfellows M.U. and the society was represented by the Prov. C.s. Bro R Vallender ……..(more names). Each brother threw a sprig of thyme on the coffin as an emblem of the order.

The pallbearers were Messrs Greening, Swaine, Dudman, Doyle, Goddard, and Meadows; the bearers being Messers G. Winters, W. Tarling, Lodge, J. Baldaro, H. Gorin, G. Evans, Shipman, and Jackson.

Rev Barton preceded the hearse which was completely covered with beautiful wreaths. The first mourning coach contained the two sons of the deceased, Master Fred and Master Joseph and two brothers; and the second coach two nephews of the deceased and Mr. G. Cumming.

The coffin was of polished oak with brass furniture. The whole funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. H. Goodwin, of Southgate Street.

Joseph is buried in the Gloucester Old Cemetery, Treadworth Road, Gloucester along with his son (also named Joseph) who died in 1902.
