Some sources show Bernard Hamrick's mother as Margaret Jane Daff Heavener, but that is incorrect. Bernard was born in 1861, according to Find A Grave, or 1865, according to the 1870 census. Either way, his mother was Nancy Gregory, his father Peter's first wife. She died in 1866 and his father remarried in 1867 to widow Margaret Daff Heavener. Because he was so young when his biological mother passed away, his step-mother Margaret was likely the only mother he remembered. That's probably how the confusion about his mother's identity started.

Only his wife, Susan Meeks Hamrick, can be found in the 1900 census. It may be that Bernard was in the military and stationed away from home at the time of the census. Susan and their children lived with her parents and siblings. The census shows that she was married with four children, but it did not include Bernard Hamrick's name. A copy of this 1900 census is included for reference purposes.
