Biography

John was born about 1815. He passed in 1860. His will was written April 23, 1860 and proved on June 25, 1860.

Fleming County State of Kentucky . I John S Hammonds do hereby make my last will and testament in manner as follows. 1st I desire that enough of my personal property may be sold to pay all my debts and funeral expenses 2nd After the payment of my depts. and funeral expenses are paid of none be sold than were to pay all debts and expenses the overage to be divided between my wife Mariah Hammonds and my four oldest children .Mary R Hughes ,Lucinda Hammonds and James E Hammonds and Caleb Hammonds. 3 rd I desire that my interest in one wheat farm be left for my and one blue plough also the heard of sheep what hogs I now have at this time and enough farming utensils to carry on farming also my bay mare molly and one red cow ,all the corn now on hand . 4th I desire that my farm be divided between my wife Mariah Hammonds and my four oldest children Mary R.Hughes ,Lucinda Hammonds James E Hammonds and Caleb Hammonds as follows .Beginning at Fleming Creek at the mouth of the branch between the two bottoms running straight line up the middle of the branch to an Ellum tree at the forks of the hollow thence with the division fence between the wheat field and the corn field to the land of John Bishop decd .the side on which the house stands .I leave to my wife during her natural life then to be divided between my three sons by my last wife Mariah namely John Hammonds William Hammonds and Robert M Hammonds the lower piece of land to be sold and the money to be divided equally between my four oldest children namely Mary R Hughes Lucinda Hammonds James E Hammonds and Caleb Hammonds with the exception of a small corner of wood land lying inside of Edward C Hammonds fence containing something over one acre that I desire my brother Edward C Hammonds to have and to hold all but the timber to be for the use of my wife . I desire that my son James E Hammonds have my saddle . Lastly I do request that James H Barton be appointed executor of this my last will and testament by me made in witness where of I assign my name this the 23rd day of April 1860 P .S I further desire that out of the money that may come out of the next corn to be raised on the portion of land now rented to James S Ross it may be put to the use of my son James in the way of purchasing him a horse giving under my hand this day and date above named .
