Asher Porter Hammond, sixth child of William Hammond and Damaris Osborn, was born 22 December 1829 in Monroe County, New York.[1] He grew up in Penfield, Monroe County, New York, and through early adulthood he went by his middle name (Porter).[2][3] Later in life, he was recorded as Asher P. or A. P. Hammond. Asher married Malana Howe on 22 December 1852 in Penfield.[1][4] He was engaged as a laborer and farmer in Penfield.[2][3] Malana died 26 September 1859 in Monroe County, NY, following the birth of their fourth child, who also died a few weeks later.[4]

Sometime between the death of Malana and June of 1860, Asher and his brother, Charles, moved to near Worthington, Greene County, Indiana.[5] They lived near their maternal Osborn cousins and worked as nursery men.[5]

Civil War: On 5 September 1861, Asher enlisted as a corporal in the Union Army, Co. F, 31st Indiana Volunteer Infantry, at Terre Haute, Indiana.[4] In 1863, he was promoted to full 2nd lieutenant and then full 1st lieutenant. On 15 August 1863, Asher was awarded a Union Defenders Certificate which lists some of the battles he was in.

During Asher's service, his three young children (Jerome, Girard, and Clarissa) were cared for by family and others. On 12 September 1864, the 31st Indiana was encamped at Worthington, Indiana. Asher wrote a letter to Brigadier General of Volunteers, W. D. Wipple, requesting leave for 20 days to make further arrangements for the care of his children. A few days after that, Asher was promoted to full Captain in Co. B (same regiment). After the close of the war, the 31st was sent to New Orleans, Louisiana, and then on to Green Lake, Texas.[4] Asher was mustered out of the Army on 8 December 1865.[4]

On 18 December 1865, Asher married his second wife, Hannah Mary Peter, at Macon, Illinois.[1][4][6] Following their marriage, the couple settled in Victoria County, Texas. They had six children together.[1][4]

Asher passed away on 9 September 1885 in Victoria County, Texas.[1][4] The exact location of his burial site is unknown. According to family lore, Asher was buried in the potter's section of a local cemetery, possibly Evergreen Cemetery in Victoria, Victoria, Texas.[7]
