Biography

David Joseph Hammond was born on 18th June 1919 in Pymble, New South Wales, Australia. He was the youngest of the eight children of Harold "Nipper" Hammond and Clara Albrecht. [1]

David Hammond is a Military Veteran.
Served in the Second Australian Imperial Force 2/1st Australian Infantry Battalion 1940-1945

Roll of Honor
David Hammond was a prisoner of war during the Second World War.

Like three of his older brothers, David served his country during the Second World War. He enlisted in the Second Australian Imperial Force on 5th January 1940 and was ultimately discharged on 9th August 1945. [2] He was a member of the 2/1st Australian Infantry Battalion. David first served in Northern Africa Campaign before his unit was moved to Greece. When Greece surrendered, like many in his unit, David was captured by the German Army and became a Prisoner of War at Stalag VIIIB, located near the village of Lamsdorf, Silesia, Germany (now Łambinowice, Poland). [3][4] The 2/1st Battalion was the same unit in which David's cousins, Ken Hammond and Arthur Evans, would later serve in Syria, Sri Lanka, Papua, and New Guinea. Following Victory in Europe in May 1945, David was released, repatriated to Australia and, after rehabiltation, demobilsed on 9th August 1945. [2] David was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, War Medal 1939-1945 and Australia Service Medal 1939-1945 for his service.

In 1947, after the war and his repatriation, David married Lola Baldry in the Chatswood South Methodist Church (now Uniting Church), Chatswood, New South Wales. [5] They had two children.

David passed away on 12th November 1996 on Bribie Island, Queensland. His ashes are interred in Bribie Island Memorial Gardens. [6] He was survived by his wife, son and daughter, and five grandchildren.
